THE BAY RIDGE BAND
Another Morning
JUST RELEASED
The Bay Ridge Band continues its exploration of the old and discovery of the new in its third CD Another Morning. The six members of this vocal group wander through the heart of America with their re-workings of jazz and blues classics (Route 66, Baby What You Want Me to Do), spirituals and traditional folk songs (Spiritual Medley, Work Song Medley, I Am a Pilgrim, Ain't A That Good News and the gospel-tinged You Can Tell the World), their originals (Nazareth Morning, a stunning Mary's Son, the catchy Hello Hello, and a plaintive ballad on the search for our deepest desires in this midst of a wasteland - Flattitre Freeway) and their "take no prisoners" renditions of two already famous tunes, Shut De Do and River of God. To add to the mix, they throw in another African arrangement (Salilaka Mokonji). The CD closes with a haunting memorial to September 11, 2001: Americana. A CD of ever-expanding sounds and ideas from this interesting group.

1> Shut The Door (Randy Stonehill)
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Shut the door, keep the devil in the night
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Light the candle evr'rythin's alright

Oh when I was a baby child, good and bad was just a game.
Many years and many trials they proved to me they're not the same
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Shut the door, keep the devil in the night
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Light the candle evr'rythin's alright

Oh Satan is an evil charmer. He's hungry for your soul to hurt.
And without your holy armor he will eat you for dessert!
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Shut the door, keep the devil in the night
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Light the candle evr'rythin's alright

Say der hey, hey, hey, shut the door
Hey, hey, hey, keep out the devil, You better shut it,
Say a prayer he won't be back no more.

My mama used to sing this song, Papa used to sing it too.
Jesus called and took them home, and so I sing this song for you.
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Shut the door, keep the devil in the night
Shut the door, keep out the devil,
Light the candle evr'rythin's alright.

2> The River Is Here (Andy Park)
Down the mountain the river flows,
And it brings refreshing wherever it goes.
Through the valleys and over the fields,
The river is rushing and the river is here.

The river of God sets our feet a-dancing,
The river of God fills our hearts with cheer,
The river of God fills our mouth with laughter,
And we rejoice for the river is here.

The river of God is teeming with life,
And all who touch it can be revived,
And those who linger on this river's shore,
Will come back thirsting for more of the Lord

So up the mountain we love to go,
To find the presence of the Lord,
Along the banks of the river we run,
We dance with laughter, giving praise to the Son.

3> Mary's Son (Fields/R. Flansburg)
Did we ever sing of the Infant God
Who made His mother's wonder wide?
The Child she bore would save the world.
He made His mother's wonder wide.

Did we ever sing of Mary's boy
Who left His mother worried sick?
He had to go to teach the priests.
He left his mother worried sick.

Did we ever sing of the Son of God
Whose mother's face was helpless grief
When she saw Him heave the cross again?
His mother's face was helpless grief.

Did we ever sing of the Risen Lord
Who turned his mother's tears to joy?
The Child she bore had saved the world!
The turned His mother's tears to joy.

4> Ain'-a That Good News (William L. Dawson)
I got a crown up in-a the kingdom, Ain'-a that good news,
I'm a-goin' to lay down this worl', goin' to shoulder up-uh my cross,
Goin'-a take it home-a to my Jesus, Ain'-a that good news.

I got a harp up in-a the kingdom, Ain'-a that good news,
I'm a-goin' to lay down this worl', goin' to shoulder up-uh my cross,
Goin'-a take it home-a to my Jesus, Ain'-a that good news.

I got a robe up in-a the kingdom, Ain'-a that good news,
I'm a-goin' to lay down this worl', goin' to shoulder up-uh my cross,
Goin'-a take it home-a to my Jesus, Ain'-a that good news.
Good news, my Lord,
Ain'-a that good news!

5> FLATTIRE FREEWAY (Maniscalco/Veras)
I dreamed of a green garden
In this skyscraper forest that lets nothing new grow
The fresh water showers dry weeds into flowers
And sprinkles on seedlings unknown

I longed just for one true story
In this wastepaper playground only tall tales get told
Give me news to delight me, and words to invite me
To watch the way real life unfolds

My hope needs mendin' but my need is unbendin'
My wantin' don't ever get cold
I can't help wishin' while guitar strings keep fishin'
For a tune that will never get old

I looked for another wonder
In this highwire circus where no risk is too bold
Keep your clowns and your lions, let the trapeze keep flyin'
But give my heart something to hold

Will destiny come to greet me
On this flattire freeway where nobody gets home?
The rest stops don't feed me, the maps never lead me
To a face that replaces alone

6> Route 66 (Bobby Troup)
If you ever plan to motor west,
travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
more than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Now you go through Saint Louis, Joplin, Missouri
And Oklahoma City looks mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff Arizona.
Don't forget Winona, Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip,
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.
Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
when you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

7> Hello, Hello (Cas Patrick)
From across three thousand miles you came ashore,
Did you know what was in store?
Had you hoped for anything more?
Suddenly in front of me a face appeared, a vision perfectly clear.
Could something so near be so dear?

Hello, hello, Who are you? How do you do?
There was nothing special in the time and place,
But nonetheless came a grace, a certain look on your face.
Through it all I still recall the way you smiled,
A smile that could beguile me to want to stay for more
Than just a little while

I'm trying to grasp the situation,
It's like the train come to the station right on time.
Do you feel you may be staying?
Because I almost feel like saying: "Will you be mine?"

Looking now on how the story was begun, did you know what was to come?
Did you think I was the one?
Looking now and how our feelings first were stirred it almost seems absurd
That both our lives could change with just a single word,

Hello, hello …

8> Baby Why You Wanna Let Go (Jimmy Reed)
You got me runnin', you got me hidin',
You got me run, hide, hide, run,
Anyway you wanna let it roll, yeah, yeah, yeah,
You got me doin' what you wanna do,
Baby why you wanna let go

I'm going up, I'm going down,
I'm going up, down, down, up,
Anyway you wanna let it roll, yeah, yeah, yeah,
You got me doin' what you wanna do,
Baby why you wanna let go

You got me peepin', you got me hidin'
You got me peep, hide, hide, peep,
Anyway you wanna let it roll, yeah, yeah, yeah,
You got me doin' what you wanna do,
Baby why you wanna let go

9> I Am A Pilgrim (traditional)
I am a pilgrim, and a stranger,
Wandering through this wearisome land.
I have a home in that yonder city,
Good Lord, and it's not made by hand

I have a mother, a sister and a brother,
Who have gone to that sweet land,
I am determined to go and see them,
All over on that distant shore

As I walk down the River Jordan
Just to bathe my weary soul,
If I could touch but the hem of his garment
Well, I believe it would make me whole

10> Work Song Medley (traditional - Arr. by Cas Patrick)

Sylvie
Bring me a little water Sylvie, bring me a little water now,
Bring me a little water Sylvie, ev'ry little once in a while.

Sylvie, Sylvie, I'm so hot and dry
Sylvie, Sylvie, can't you hear me cryin'?

Bring me a little water Sylvie …

Sylvie says she loves me, but I believe she lies,
She hasn't come to see me since the last day of July

Bring me a little water …

She brought me a little coffee, she brought me a little tea,
She brought me nearly ev'ry damn thing …
But she didn't bring the jailhouse key.

Hammer Ring
Oh let your hammer ring,
Oh let your hammer ring

Oh yes I'm going down to the bottom,
Oh let your hammer ring,
Yes I'm going down to the bottom,
Oh let your hammer ring,
I got a nine-pound hammer
Oh let your hammer ring
I got a nine-pound hammer,
Oh let your hammer ring

Why don't you bring me a little water,
Oh let your hammer ring,
Why don't you bring me a little water,
Oh let your hammer ring,
Why don't you cry a little louder,
Oh let your hammer ring,
Why don't you cry a little louder,
Oh let your hammer ring,
Oh let your hammer ring …

Take This Hammer
Take this hammer, carry it to the captain (3)
Tell him I'm gone (2)

If he asks you, was I runnin' (3)
Tell him I's flyin' (2)

If he asks you, was I laughin' (3)
Tell him I's cryin' (2)

I don't want no cast-iron shackles (3)
It hurts my pride (2)

Take this hammer, take it to the captain (3)
Tell him I'm gone

12> Nazareth Morning (Maniscalco/Veras)
She breaks the darkness with a hope no one has seen
Beneath her heart there grows a grace that has not been
Nazareth Morning
Has come to be
The dawn that eyes have longed to see

Carpenter's lady with a baby at her breast
A humble court where kings and shepherds are her guests
Nazareth Morning
Bethlehem Star
A light for people near and far
Dawn grows to Day, Day comes to stay
The dark of sin won't dim the way
The darkness lied and tried to hide the day in death
Yet in her cries there lies a hope in every breath
Nazareth Morning
Calvary Night,
Can never stop the truth and light

Another morning brings an unexpected light
Another Mary sees an unexpected sight
Nazareth Morning
Rolls stones away
No night can end this endless day

Nazareth Morning
Will always be
The dawn that longs to set us free (3)

13> Spiritual Medley (traditional - arr. by Chris Vath)
Lord I want to be a Christian in-a my heart, in-a my heart,
Lord I want to be a Christian, in-a my heart

I don't want to be like Judas, in-a my heart, in-a my heart,
I don't want to be like Judas, in-a my heart

In-a my heart, in-a my heart,
Lord I want to be a Christian in-a my heart

Lord, oh hear me prayin', Lord, oh hear me prayin',
Lord, oh hear me prayin', I want to be more holy every day.

Like Peter when you said to him "feed my sheep" (4)

Oh, Lord, oh my Lord, oh my sweet Lord, keep me from sinking down

I'll tell you what I mean to do,
Keep me from sinking down,
I mean to go to Heaven too,
Keep me from sinking down

Lord I want to be a Christian in-a my heart (Lord, oh hear me prayin' …),
I want to be more holy every day

14> You Can Tell The World (traditional - arr. Marco Squicciarini, Jonathan Fields)
You can tell the world about this,
And you can tell the world about that,
Tell'em what Jesus has done,
Tell'em that the Comforter has come,
And brought joy, great joy to my soul!

Well, He took my feet out of the miry clay,
And put them on the rock to stay

Chorus
You know my Lord done just what He said
He healed the sick and raised the dead

15> Americana (Vath/Veras)
Somebody said one day the stars were gonna fall down, down, down.
Nobody said I'd see the gleaming twilight fall down, down, down.
Don't want to look up, at the blackened sky above me
get up, when darkness lies around me.
Show me the dawn. Show me I'm not alone.
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my mother / I'm gonna get goin' to meet my father
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my brother / I'm gonna get goin' to meet my Lord

No one prepared me to know that the night was gonna fall round, round, round
O how it scared me to see how fast the dark would crawl round, round, round
I want to get out to a freedom that awaits me
get out to a hope that still escapes me
Show me the dawn. Show me I'm not alone.
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my mother / I'm gonna get goin' to meet my father
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my brother / I'm gonna get goin' to meet my Lord

Thunder awake me to see the light that shines for all: sound! sound! sound!
Lightning shake me to quake at freedom's thund'rous call: sound! sound! sound!
I want to wake up, to a new hope that surrounds us
wake up, to a freedom that is boundless
I'll sing to the dawn, I'll know that I'm not alone.
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my mother / I'm gonna get goin' to meet my father
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my brother / I'm gonna get goin' to meet my sister
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my children…
I'm gonna get goin' to meet my Lord! (Who'll stop the pain; Call me by name)

Send my roots rain! Rain!
